True to form, a new Eternals title has been announced. The book, slated for release this November is just in time for the planned 2021 release of the MCU’s iteration of the eponymous group of Immortals.
The book, from rockstar creative team Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribić and Matthew Wilson, offers a bold new interpretation of Jack Kirby’s classic Marvel mythology.
“What’s the point of an eternal battle?” Marvel’s official solicit asks, “For millions of years, 100 Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we’d be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares.”
The solicit, a subtle tip of the hat to the oft forgotten piece of Marvel lore, plays at the usage of The Eternals in recent years. In the first arc of his Avengers run, Jason Aaron cast the Eternals as a sort of “immune system” for the Earth, a way to combat the mysterious celestial infection known simply as “the horde”.
Regrettably the Eternals’ flame was snuffed out in the same arc, so answers to the vast array of questions this change represents are in frustratingly short supply. Will we see the clash between revitalized Eternals and the Horde? No one knows, but one thing is certain. With Kieron Gillen, the man behind the epic volume of Marvel’s Darth Vader, we’re sure to be in for one hell of a ride.
