From Burnside, to the Birds of Prey and back again! Batgirl is getting an overhaul this august. A new creative team and a new costume to boot! – designed by Sean Gordon Murphy (Batman: White Knight)
“This is supposed to be a version of the costume that she was working on when she still lived with her dad,” incoming series writer Mairghread Scott told Polygon. “That’s why it looks so much like her original Batgirl: Year One outfit — like, she’s with her dad. She can’t get out back to Burnside, and this is like the emergency. So the version that she was working on [back in the day] that she had stashed here just in case. It helps us with the story a little bit too, because it’s a little less bright — we wanted her to be more stealthy, and we want her to be able to integrate some more tech with the belt.”
Mairghread Scott and Paul Pelletier will take over as the book’s creative team with Batgirl #26. Below is the full cover featuring Murphy’s redesigned costume.
Eagle eyed fans will notice the similarities of this costume to not only Barbara’s “Year One” costume, but also her original animated series look. What remains to be seen is how long this look will stick around or if it is simply a factor of the story being told.
Either way, we’re happy to see Barbara get a much needed update to her costume. Now, if they could just do something about that mask.
BATGIRL #26 releases on 08/22/18 from DC Comics.
